Contribution
Although it is commonly accepted to understand teaching as an intentional social event, the understanding of what is meant by intention and by the social is often unclear. It seems to have far-reaching consequences whether teaching as a social occurrence is understood within the framework of action theory or communication theory. As a point of departure I firstly present an analysis of teaching’s most crucial concepts ‘ends’ and ‘means’ from the perspective of communication theory. Secondly I present in a communication theoretical perspective a re-description of the didactic triangle in which the triangle illustrates the two conditions of teaching as communication: at least two parties and content. Thirdly I in the light of the analysis of intention (ends and means) and the re-description of the didactical triangle point to consequences for the conceptualization of interaction in class rooms.
