Contribution
Based on a study on academic career paths of PhD graduates in Switzerland I will show that "Internationality" especially in the form of geographic mobility has become a strong requirement that guides the plans and blueprints of young scientists. However, the institutionalization of international academic mobility, driven through (national and international) institutions of research funding which push, enable and foster mobility, should be understood not only in terms of its functional goals of knowledge acquisition (at the individual level) and knowledge transfer (at the institutional level). In referring to the theory of academic "fields" of Bourdieu I present data that documents the socialising and stratifying purpose and results of the pressure for mobility, resulting in inequalities related to gender and social class in the accumulation of international cultural and social capital.
