Facing the demographic development, enterprises have to cope with a “greying” workforce due to a lack of younger workers. The challenge is to maintain older workers’ employability for a longer period whilst in the past they were dismissed or sent to early retirement. Findings of the IAB (Institute for Employment Research, Nuremberg) establishment panel indicate that companies first of all appreciate older employees’ professional experience which they developed during their working life. However, companies also fear older employees’ decreasing physical and mental capacities. Therefore, it is a challenge to identify and design ageing-adequate tasks for those who should remain employed but cannot continue working on their hitherto working place. Another challenge is to further qualify and train older employees.
This contribution is based on the findings of the Leonardo-da-Vinci-project ‘BusQua: Business development and qualification’ The goal of this project is to develop ageing-adequate tasks in three European regions. These tasks will not only allow for companies’ benefits but they will also include the transfer of a specific didactical approach to train older employees for these tasks. The contribution will mainly focus on the methodological approach and some of the empirical findings.
