Contribution
Families experiencing negative psychosocial conditions (e.g., marital violence, low educational background, poverty, lack of social support, substance abuse) are typically on social assistance and receive many forms of support delivered by the social agents of the municipal services. The present study explored two issues. First, the school support used by mothers referred by the social services as living in at-risk conditions in comparison to those used by non at-risk mothers. Second, the relation between the satisfaction with school support and family development, according to the psychosocial risk level.
Method
Participants were obtained from a sample of 614 mothers, 315 referred by the Social Services (54,5%), in which 33,2% were low-risk families and 21,3% were medium-high risk families, and 299 non-referred mothers, that correspond to the non at-risk group. This sample was selected by the participations in a parenting program called Personal and Family Support (Apoyo Personal y Familiar, APF), developed in the Junta de Castilla y León (Spain).
Expected Outcomes
This results indicate that the percentage of the mothers’ use of the school as a source of support is higher in the non at-risk than at-risk mothers. The satisfaction with the school support was higher for at-risk than non-at risk mothers. And finally, satisfaction with school support had beneficial effects on some aspects of family development.
