Paper Session
Contribution
Research on children’s experiences surrounding the loss of a caregiver have historically been rare. Reasons for this include a lack of belief in the value of consulting children as well as the ethical pitfalls of conducting research on bereavement with vulnerable participants (e.g. Clark, 2010; Punch, 2002). When consulting bereavement professionals they often argue that this was due to a strong opinion in the past, that children were simply not capable of talking about their own grief. Consequently, when the Danish school bereavement response system (b-system) was introduced in the early 1990’s, it was based entirely on the views of teachers and professionals, while student views were completely ignored (Lytje, 2013). Based on a co-participatory research stance, this ongoing PhD project undertakes an exploratory study on the challenges that parentally bereaved students face today when returning to school. Furthermore, it investigates what forms of help they would prefer.
