Contribution
- Society has changed both locally and globally, and that's one reason why students and other individuals must become entrepreneurial. Everybody must now take greater responsibility for their life than earlier. Documents from the EU and other documents from the Nordic government and many other European countries official documents are claiming entrepreneurship. Higher education has long been criticized for not preparing today's students for entrepreneurship to their future careers by giving them the knowledge and skills that businesses demand. Universities need to basically engage in a form of education that responds to the changes that society is undergoing. The concept of entrepreneurship with its traditional background in economics and business has changed content since it was introduced in the school system for training of students in all areas. Everyone needs to become their own contractor for his own life, to take care of his- or herself, make decisions, and take responsibility. The entrepreneurs have moved into new scientific and practical fields and now as a tool for learning - entrepreneurial learning. Entrepreneurial learning is a way of learning that students, in correlation with the development of theoretical, subject-specific knowledge, also are developing entrepreneurial skills. An important thing is that they work mostly with real problem solving. These knowledge and skills will be useful for example in everyday life, employment, and personal development. The student becomes at the same time an important part of a community's growth and success. To be self-directed and rich in ideas are important qualities for people in today's and tomorrow's society (Otterborg, 2011). This applies to small children as well as students in higher education. Schools and universities must take active part in the process to foster every student in an entrepreneurial way.
When I started my doctoral studies you talked about entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurship at school. That is not interesting because every student is not going to be, what you perhaps think, an entrepreneur for a trade and company. In my possession of teacher in pedagogic I had another question: What in the education is of fundamental values to force students to develop knowledge and skills that are entrepreneurial because the students have to be their own entrepreneur with responsibility for their learning and their livelihood. This could besides be a way to successful and sustainable business and to a better life for everybody in the society.
The purpose of my study was to form knowledge about entrepreneurial learning and make a contribution to knowledge about a form of learning, from a student perspective. The students´ teachers worked in an entrepreneurial way and in cooperation with trade and companies nearby.
Six years later I have contacted the students again to ask what influence the education from six form college had had to their continuing study- and career choice.
