School enrollment is considered to be a crucial threshold in live and in the educational careers of children (Faust et al. 2012). The first day of school is of particular interest, because it marks the ritual transition into school education. This contribution takes into account the arrangement of the first day of school as an essential element in its meaning for the child, the parents and the teachers. Addressed is the arrival and orientation in the new institution, the possibility of a professional organization, the prerequisites for the establishment of the class as a community of learning and the challenges of the arrangement of the first day of school in a heterogeneous learning community, with due regard to the individual preconditions that every child has because of its primary socialization, it's abilities and the preparations in kindergarten (see Carcle 2012). At that the cultural connotations of the chosen countries are considered. Photographs of enrollment in Japan, Germany and Italy are analyzed comparatively. With the aid of the documentary method (Bohnsack 2001 & 2003) the photos are interpreted and their ikonological-iconocally content is contrasted with each other. In the center of consideration are photographs of the first school day and embedded in them the documented school culture. Thereby, the meaning of the transition within an institutionalized education process can be comparatively analyzed within its cultural horizon.
