Contribution
Freedom of choice is being currently discussed in Finland. It has already entered the education system. Elesewhere, its has been widely spread and studied phenomenon (i.e. van Zanten & Kosunen 2013). School choice of parents with regular children have been studied in Finland to an extent (i.e., Seppänen, Kalalahti, Rinne & Simola 2015; Seppänen 2006; Kalalahti, Silvennoinen & Varjo 2015; Bernelius 2011). However, parents with children with special educational needs are often left from the analysis; school choice is a fairly new topic to Finnish education and needs to be considered broadly, as there are fewer pupils in intensified or special education support than those in regular support. This study is a starting point in analyzing the school choice for those parents whose children are in special education or intensified educations in Finland in Finland. The data will be considered through the theories of class and the self (value attaching to bodies) (Bourdieu, Skeggs) as well as social justice.
Municipalities hold a lot of power in organizing educational practices. Due the parents feel the same about educational practices from the point of view of school choice, depending on the municipality? What differences are there between background factors and choices? What kind of role does special educational need and the level of it have?
