Session Information
09 SES 09, Network Keynote: Reflections From an Educational Effectiveness Researcher on International Studies. A Case-Study of the Flemish Educational System
Network Keynote Session
Contribution
International studies such as PISA, TIMSS and PIRLS provide information on educational systems worldwide and over several years.
This keynote will discuss (a part of) what educational researchers can learn from these large-scale international studies. To that end, we will present three examples of ongoing studies.
The first example is a study on early tracking and the advantages/disadvantages of providing a vocational track. This study highlights the short-term and long-term effects and several kinds of outcomes such as student achievement, early school leaving, and opportunities in the labor market.
A second example is a study on changes in quality and equity in educational systems over time (primary and secondary education).
The third example is an educational effectiveness study on the effect of classes and schools on student achievement in mathematics in Flemish primary education.
This keynote will conclude with some reflections on strengths and weaknesses of large-scale international studies.
