Since 2012 Dutch schools for primary and lower secondary education must address sexual diversity as a characteristic of Dutch society. According to a governmental communiqué the most important reason behind this modification of the core objectives is that "giving attention to sexuality and sexual diversity in education is important for the development of sexual health and sexual defensibility, a safe school climate, tolerance and respect for homosexuality, bisexuality and gender identity" (Stb. 2012, 470). SLO has taken the initiative to develop a series of curriculum products. All products were developed in cooperation and consultation with the ministry of education, teachers and expertise centres on sexuality and sexual diversity. These products include: 1. Literature and policy review to outline and describe relevant concepts. 2. An elaboration of the core objective into knowledge, skill and attitudinal objectives for different age groups. 3. Pedagogical examples of addressing these objectives for different age groups. For these examples a distinction is made between subject content, a cross-curricular approach, the creation of a safe pedagogical school climate and the involvement of the school environment. 4. Analysis of learning and teaching materials: based on the elaboration of the core objective an instrument was developed and used to analyse the extent to which present day materials cover aspects of sexual diversity. This paper will first present the elaboration of the core objective as a possible example for other education systems. The instrument for the analysis of learning and teaching materials will also be shared, together with the results of the analysis. Next, a number of case studies will be presented showing how the curricular products are used in schools and how pupils’ and teachers’ experiences contribute to improved climate fostering sexual diversity.
