26 SES 08 C, Leadership Styles and Their Consequences
Paper Session
Contribution
The behavior of the leader is a factor that directly influences the silence or silence of individuals' thoughts and knowledge about an existing situation within the organization. In situations where individuals are interested in the organization and itself, deliberate silence, avoidance of expressing ideas and thoughts can be expressed as organizational silence. According to the style of the leader, organizational silence can be interpreted as positive or negative. However, now that our technology and information are spreading rapidly in our globalizing world, innovations are taking place in a very short time with other innovations. For this reason, organizations and societies need individuals who constantly improve themselves in order to adapt to the developing world conditions and sustain their existence, to work for the beliefs and interests of their organizations and to develop suggestions.
When we look at the literature, we see that the concept of organizational silence has recently gained importance and is a new concept. According to a research conducted in 2015, about half of the studies conducted on organizational silence have been made in the last few years, and 38% of them are made for education workers. Only 18% of all studies on the concept of organizational silence are directed towards determining the relationship between leadership style and organizational silence (Bayın, 2015). Pasha and Negiş Işık (2017) examined the teachers' level of confidence in school principals and the effect of ethical leadership behaviors exhibited by the school principal on organizational silence. According to this, as the teachers' confidence in the school principal increases and the school administrators show more ethical behaviors, the level of organizational silence in the school decreases.
Güçlü, Kalkan and Dağlı (2017) examined the relationship between the leadership styles of school principals and organizational cynics according to the perceptions of teachers at Vocational and Technical Secondary Schools. As a result of the research, it was found that the school principals exhibited the transformational leadership style behaviors more than the transactional leadership style behaviors, that teachers have moderate organizational cynics, as organizational leadership behaviors of school administrators’ increase, teachers' organizational cynicism levels decrease and that leadership style behaviors of school principals are predictors of organizational cynicism. Pinder and Harlos (2001) examined the conceptual dimension of organizational silence. It focuses on the relationship between organizational silence and perceived organizational injustice. In his study of literature review, he concluded that the perception of organizational injustice caused organizational silence.
If the studies on organizational silence are evaluated in general, it is seen that the studies are carried out on the enterprises operating in different sectors and industries such as hospitals, service enterprises, banks, telecommunication and hotel enterprises. There is not much study about the subject in educational sector.
Method
In this study, it was aimed to determine the relationship between the leadership style of school administrators and organizational silence. In order to realize this aim, descriptive and relational design have been used. Descriptive designs are processes that attempt to describe the characteristics of individuals or objects participating in the study, using data obtained from observations on a sample, or in situations that can be reached (Karadağ, 2010). The relational design is defined as a research approach aiming to determine the coexistence of two or more variables (Karasar, 1984). The universe of the research will be formed by the teachers working in the provinces of Malatya in 2017-2018 academic year. The sample will be teachers working in district centers and neighborhoods. Easy accessibility and quota sampling method will be used for sample determination. Quota sampling researchers first divide the research universe into categories according to their specific characteristics such as age, gender, education level. Then the ratios (quota) of these categories in the research universe are determined and the samples are taken in proportion to the quotas in this category. The data collection tools of the research are the "Organizational Silence Scale" and "School Administrators' Leadership Styles" scales. As the final form, the data collection tool was prepared consisting of 71 items for the two scales and 6 independent variables as “personal information form”. The scales to be used will be analyzed with MS EXCEL and SPSS 23.0 statistical packet programs. Descriptive statistics, normality tests, t-test and ANOVA for parametric data, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests for nonparametric tests, correlation and regression tests will be applied to determine the relationship.
Expected Outcomes
Since data collection process continues, the findings of the paper will be ready before the submission of full text to the conference. The results will consist of descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, presented with tables and graphs. As expected outcome, some leadership styles could be more related with organizational silence than other leadership styles. Statistical significant differences and relationships could indicate new insights to the educational administration literature. The results will be presented and discussed in detail in the light of previous related findings. This work was supported by Research Fund of the Inonu University. Project Number: SYL-2018-1037
