Paper Session
Contribution
South Tyrol is an autonomous province in Italy with a German, Italian and Ladin speaking population in which a dual VET system, similar to the Austrian, German or Swiss VET system, developed on the upper secondary level in parallel to an apprenticeship system that grew out of the traditional Italian school-based system.
In the opening session of VETNET, South Tyrol experts will share their insights on the status, development and challenges of vocational education and training in South Tyrol.
The perspective of a Trade Association and Service Provider
Thomas Pardeller, Direktor – Direttore lvh.apa Wirtschaftsverband Handwerk und Dienstleister – Confartigianato Imprese

More than 95% of the companies in South Tyrol are SMEs, dislocated in all the 116 villages and towns of the various valleys in the country. The average dimension of a SME in the country is less than four employees, and often one of these is an apprentice, doing his education through the dual VET, with theoretical part of education at school and the practical part in the company.
Together with the professional school, the company who is educating and training the apprentice has a crucial role not only for the improvement of the practical skills of a young person but also for the constant development of qualified and specialised workforce to keep the high quality of the goods and services produced in the territory.
South Tyrol has three major pillars on which the economy in the country is based on. The tourism, the agriculture and the craft sector. Above all, this third sector is the lead educator through the dual VET and increasingly focusing on the training of skilled workers via the dual system to maintain the competitiveness of the companies on the local, national and international market. Lvh.apa Wirtschaftsverband Handwerk und Dienstleister as the trade association for craftsmen is providing strong support to its crafts sectors and trades to maintain the dual VET system attractive to the companies and the young trainees as well.
