Recently the number of the international students is increasing at a high rate in each country. In Korea, according to the statistics of the Ministry of Education in 2018, the number of foreign students who studying in Korea has increased by more than 10% for the three consecutive years. The number of foreign students has increased from 123,858 in 2017 to 142,205 in 2018 (Enews, 2018). According to the data of the Ministry of Education of Chinese in 2018, there are 66,672 Chinese students who are studying in Korea. Students from China and other international students experiences language problem and cultural shocks while studying in Korea. For them to adapt and adjust to Korean language and culture takes time because of their home countries cultural background. Apart of having a lot of language and cultural adjustment, but the impression between Korean and international students has been most severe problem , and won’t improve obvious over time. The interpersonal relationship is closely related to the impressions from character, appearance, behaviour and other related factors. (Heochun-yeong,Gimgwang-il, Ijanghan, 1999, Guang Yahong, 2018).
Several studies (Xin Du, Jae Hwang Park, 2013; Xu Huiying,2014; Yoon Ji Won and Kim Sang Wook, 2017; Zhu Yang,2018; Park Kwangwon,2017) have been done on Chinese students’ adaption and adjusting to Korean language and culture. Also, other studies been done in China, and Korea about Korea social impression, the general state of impression among international students to Korean students and Korean students to international students.(Jin Shiren, 2014; Wang Shuo, 2018; Weiching-yong, 2011). However, little is known about Chinese international students’ impressions of Korea students. Therefore, this paper will study about Chinese international students' impressions of Korea students by using Taxonomic Analysis research method and analyze data through componential analysis technique by sorting out the effects of interpersonal relationship between Chinese and Korean students towards adaptation and adjustment to Korean cultural.
Also, the study findings expected to raise awareness to Korean higher educational stakeholders about the challenges facing international students from Chinese and other parts related to impression and interpersonal relationship between Korean and international students. The findings and recommendations of this study are useful to Korean education stakeholders to address general problems of international students with diverse education background and culture. The need of increase of international students in South Korean universities must be go hand in hand with better means of raising awareness among Korean students and citizens at large about foreign students and accommodating their cultural diversity and consequently meet their core business which is academic achievements. And also point out the enlightenment from the research results, and make suggestions for improving the ability to adapt to study abroad. Through the data, can find out the trouble problems and enlightenments for the Ministry of Education of Korea and the university institutes to boost the quantity and quality of foreign students. And, the result can show the students who want to study in Korea and their parents objective and correct informations; can be the reference data when the Ministry of Education of Korea or the university institutes want to make or revise some policies change to boost the quantity and quality of foreign students.
Method
This study employs ethnography design which emerge from anthropology and adopted by sociologists. Ethnography is the fieldwork research method of the anthropology, is the comprehensive view and attitude to see the world and people. Also means the records of the fieldwork materials. The most popular analytical methods of ethnographic study is Taxonomic Analysis and Componential Analysis(Yong Sook Lee 2016, Spradley 1979). Taxonomic Analysis means explaining the structure of the conceptual world of each society by faithfully grasping the classification systems that are used by field members to conceptualize the world around them. Componential analysis is the analysis of words through structured sets of semantic features(Yong Sook Lee, 2009). This study will use Taxonomic Analysis to study Chinese international students' impressions of Korea students, and figure out the consequences of it towards adaption and adjustment to Korean culture. The total number of participants in the study is 45. Among them, 15 is bachelor’s degree students, 15 is master’s degree students, and 10 is doctorate degree students. Date will be collected through on-line chatting or video call through Chinese communication app Wechat. The data collection and analysis process is as follows. 1st, Send Substitution Frame Question 'My impression of Korea students is__’ to the research participants through Wechat. Participants will be asked to give all their impressions to researcher and then researcher get the feedback with the question are there more options as clarification or subdivision. If the response is meet the study demand, the researcher write all the options on sticky note, for each. 2nd, Set sort by pasting the options which have a same theme together and then define the theme's name. Then send the result to research participants and get the feedback with the question 'Is there any options can be divided?', 'Is there more options can be added? After that, fill the obtained Taxonomic Analysis result in form and figure out the proportion of each option. 3rd, Analyze the data through Componential Analysis research method. Also, list all the options of each catagory, then get the data through the questionnaires that give participants options to choose(Strong Positive Influence1, Weak Positive2, No Influence3, Weak Negative Influence4, Strong Negative Influence5). After that, the study will figure out the ranking of influence degree and finally, in the discussion section, reasons and specific impacts will be analyzed, and the inspirations and the suggestions will be put forward.
Expected Outcomes
According to the preliminary research results, Chinese International students' impressions of Korean local students are classified into three categories, there are Appearance, Character, and Behaviour as high category. There are six medium categories under the high category of appearance, which are Hairstyle, Plastic, Making up, Clothing, Skin, and attitude to appearance. Under the high category Character, there are two medium catagory, there are individual level and interpersonal level. And there are six medium categories, which are dietary habit, life style, studying, part-time job features, entertainment features, the behavior towards to Chinese student under the high category Behavior. The he number of the total option obtained from 40 research participants is 163. All the options is sorted into 62 lowest categories, 11 lowest categories are under the Appearance, 22 lowest categories are under the Character, and 29 lowest categories are under the Behavior. Then the lowest were ranked by the numbers of the research participants who mentioned that, from most to least. As a result , the top fifteen are study hard, good at marking up, being polite, kind, like to help others, avtive, stay up late, like to gather, paying attention to appearance, independence, stingy, indifference, strong sense of respect, do a lot of part-time works. Moreover, it can be known that there is no obvious relationship between the impression of Korean students and gender, the academic degree. Theproportions obtained by research participants of dietary habit, marking up, face--lifting is similar to the results of the research ‘ the image of Korea in the eyes of Chinese college students’(Wang Shuo, 2018) . The data are obtained from the Componential Analysis to figure out the ranking of influence degree for each category.
