Contribution
According to the International Gender Gap Index Report 2020, Ukraine ranks 59th out of 153 countries. Gender inequality prevailing in the labor market is one of the most striking examples. Since 2014, the pay gap between men and women has increased from 24% to 26%. The absolute majority of men believe that there is a division into "female" and "male" occupations. In addition to that, more than 40% of men in Ukraine believe that a woman should leave her paid work to spend more time with her family. Only 3% of those who take paternity leave are men (fathers). Traditional stereotyped gender roles, patriarchal norms limit the capacity and ability of women to fulfill their human rights. A clear example of that happens in the field of education. 80% of IT students are males. The labour market is something where it happens. We want to overcome this. We want Ukraine to really capitalize on all the human capital and human potential that both women and men can provide.
In order to determine the social role of women leaders, to implement the principles of gender equality in all spheres of life, to change attitudes towards women and to make their potential more effective, 260 undergraduates of I, II, III, IV years of study were interviewed.
Method
This research is quantitative with a survey type to determine the factors that influence a women's attitude and behavior to leadership. Participants in this study were 260 undergraduates of Lutsk National technical University (Lutsk, Ukraine).Three faculties of different majors were chosen to cover the equality in quantity between male and female students taking part in survey: there were 143 male students and 117 females respectively from faculties of Mechanical Engineering, Computer Sciences and Business. Researchers used Google Forms in distributing research questionnaires during the pandemic. Researchers made a questionnaire containing questions about students’ vision on woman engagement with the labour market as well as her leadership career development. Our approach was to identify the qualities a woman has to possess in order to star up or get a career appointment as well as the obstacles that women have to overcome.
Expected Outcomes
The main purpose of this research was to determine the problems of women’s career development as a challenge for young people. Within the questioning undergraduate students technical specialties we referred to the young people need of knowledge about new leadership dimension for sustainable development which requires gender equality and new paradigm of women’s engagement with the labor market of Ukraine. The results showed that there is no GENDER difference in evaluation of leader’s morale, knowledge, and attitude while experience and education does partially matter. But the survey showed the equal students’ demand (58% male and 63% females) to booster their leadership skills in university curricular or extracurricular activities. The collected results on the question about the main obstacles that a woman have to cope with on the way to success showed that both girls and boys consider family and motherhood as the main obstruction (31% male and 35% female). However, women are inspired to overcome the obstacles due to desire to get freedom (29% ) or feel equality with the men (36%). The results of the survey were discussed with students and faculties at the Scientific Council meeting which led to providing extracurricular classes on leadership skills boosting.
