Theoretical framework: In the face of the serious threats to human health and life that are currently emerging, health promotion is essential. According to the Ottawa charter, health promotion (HP) is “the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health” (Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, 1998). People must be able to “identify and to realize aspirations, to satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the environment” (World Health Organization, 2021) if they want to achieve physical, mental, and social wellbeing. Many international agencies have emphasized the importance of integrating wellbeing and health promotion into planning educational strategies and school management with the threat of a pandemic (OECD, 2021). The health promoting school (HPS) model can provide a useful framework for developing cross-sectoral cooperation between the health and education sectors. The HPS approach recognizes that learning and health are closely related, aims at individual and organizational change, and acknowledges that all aspects of the school can affect student health (Bartelink & Bessems, 2019; Vilaça et al., 2019). Many of the features of HPS have been crucial during the pandemic. The HPS approach covers the main elements of health promotion identified by international agencies to guide emergency response, such as intersectorality, sustainability, empowerment, public health engagement, equity, and a life course perspective (Saboga-Nunes et al., 2020; Turunen et al., 2017). The approach supports collaboration between schools and families, as well as community and health services. Methods/methodology: The paper aims to indicate to what extent health promotion issues are included in Polish school curricula. The main research questions were as follows: 1. What is the level of health promotion implementation in Polish schools? 2. Is there a difference in health promotion implementation between health promoting schools and schools without the health promoting schools certificate? 3. What is the status of school health promotion and school health education in Poland? The quantitative results came from an online survey among school principals in Poland that was part of the international project “COVID-19 health literacy school principals survey.” The survey was carried out between June 2021 and December 2021. The qualitative findings are based on a document analysis of curricula and policies regarding school health education and promotion.
