As a consequence of the increased ethnic diversity in Denmark, there has been an increase in ethnic and cultural diversity at the Danish University Colleges dealing with professional educations related to welfare services. In this paper, I will engage with questions on education, cultural diversity and power relations from two perspectives. On the one hand, the paper will analyze the common core subject ‘General Bildung: Christianity, life orientation and citizenship’ as an example of how educational policies and discourses related to teacher education responds to globalization and current debated on culture. On the other hand, the paper will show how students’ educational experiences intersect with their personal life stories and self-perception. By bringing the two perspectives together the paper suggests, that the subject’s contradictory purpose and curriculum makes it difficult for students of minority background to take part on equal terms as their peers. In conclusion, the paper will discuss the need in education to address internal dynamics of power, curriculum and the student group.
