In my research project I am examining various forms of learning of Polish immigrants in Iceland, including their participation and non-participation in formal and non-formal adult education. Within a few years the number of Polish immigrants in Iceland has grown rapidly, which has created some tensions in the Icelandic society and stereotyping against the Polish community. In my project I am looking at this situation from the perspective of migrants themselves and ask them (through 20 semi-structured interviews) generally about their life in Iceland and reasons for migration, as well as more specifically about their participation in the social, political and educational life. I am both addressing the challenge faced by adult Polish immigrants in Iceland and the challenge faced by institutions of adult education. I am also trying to find good practices in Icelandic adult education for immigrants that could be used in other countries, including Poland.
My research derives from migration studies and studies on education – adult education, multicultural education, civic education and the critical pedagogy of place.
In the paper I will show some results of my research project and reflect on: the reasons for immigrants' participation and non-participation in adult education - both formal and non-formal. I will also show how adult immigrants perceive their own learning in the new place (also informal learning). Polish immigrants' socio-economic situation and background will be discussed, and concepts of cultural and social capital will be applied. The main theoretical framework for the analysis is, however, the pedagogy of place, with its focus on the mutual relation between people and places.
