Contribution
This analysis investigates whether a relationship between item format and item complexity is ascertainable when examining orthographic competences among students at 4th grade (primary school).
The data applied result from the piloting survey of the Austrian educational standard test, which is the first national large-scale assessment in Austria. Regular testing at 4th grade will begin in 2013. In primary school, educational standards are based on competence models for the subjects German and Mathematics.
This study examines a) whether there is an effect of the item format on the item complexity and b) whether it is – in principle – possible to differentiate between an active (productive) competence and a passive (receptive) competence or whether these are merely different dimensions of the same competence.
