Joint Symposium NW7-NW10-NW22
Contribution
Curricula integration of studies taken during international exchange programs is often considered ‘too hard’ in practice. This presentation describes a case from Helsinki School of Economics MBA program (Finland) where this matter was taken out of the too-hard basket. It identifies key learning that may be adopted and adapted by others wanting to systematically integrate learning from exchange experiences. This case describes an effort to create an exchange program that was integrated completely as possible with the total degree curriculum. In 2008, after 2 years of solid planning and negotiation, the first ‘International week’ for Executive MBA students was conducted. Students from Poland, Singapore, Korea and Finland all came together in a specially designed one week intense study program for credit towards their MBA degree. The week ran again in 2009 and 2010, incorporating lessons learned with each experience of the many foreseen and unforeseen curricula implications. The exchange week itself obviously required planning, but not so obviously, so did the integration with the rest of the program in each respective location both before and after the exchange period. Good attention is often given to the cultural briefing and de-briefing for exchange, but this presentation focuses on curricula integration.
