This research will focus on tensions that the multicultural youth face during one year preparatory vocational training in a Finnish vocational school in the area of social and health care. The objective of the research is to clarify the nature of tensions and contradictions they face when balancing between different cultural worlds; that is between home, school and main stream culture. Research questions are what kinds of tensions and contradictions emerge, how the multicultural youth face them and what kinds of solutions they find. Main theoretical framework is cultural-historical activity theory. Main method used in the research is interviews with students and teachers. The expected outcome is that multicultural youth face many kinds of cultural boundaries and tensions; furthermore, they employ different methods to overcome the tensions.
