There is a paucity of studies on women who enroll on PhD studies in the so called “Third World” countries. For most women undertaking a post-degree is a problematic choice. A post-graduate study is a process that most of the time leads to some life changes but of which most students are unaware. As in most countries, women attending universities are concentrated in the so called “assistancial” disciplinary areas. In Mexico women´s university enrolment is as follows: 61% in education and humanities and a 50% in social science, 52% in health science and only a 23% in engineering - mostly in chemistry. In a recent poll data on a PhD program on education of the state University of Guadalajara, we found that 65.2% of the students were women and 34.8% were men. The age average was 40 years old. The majority (73.9%) were single.
This paper is about the above PhD program. Our attention is focusing on categories such as gender, class by origin and destiny, religion, age, marital status, cultural context, etc. in order to see how they are mediating the female performance. These intersections involved are key to explain what are the changes that students face. Currently we are using a qualitative method to explore questions such as: what are the connections between patriarchal culture, labour demands and domesticity? Interviews will give us data in order to compare results with other studies from European countries on female postgraduate students.
