Research Question: How does the application of the DEAL, RACSR, and "Symptom" strategies enhance students' abilities to analyze cause-and-effect relationships of social issues and develop logical reasoning through literary texts?
Objective: The study aims to systematically develop students' text-processing skills and high-order cognitive abilities (analysis, synthesis, and interpretation) by analyzing character actions. Furthermore, it seeks to guide students in forming analytical conclusions by linking cause-and-effect relationships in literary texts with broader socio-public issues.
Theoretical Framework: This research is grounded in Bloom’s Taxonomy and the concept of metacognitive instruction. These paradigms prioritize the learner's ability to critically analyze, synthesize, and reflect on their cognitive processes rather than passively consuming information. The study aligns with the PISA framework's core component: Reading Literacy, where text interaction is defined as critical thinking and interpretation.
Methodology / Methods: The study describes a practical lesson model focused on developing analytical and synthesis skills. Using A. Faizollauly's short story "The Fire" as the research material, the dynamics of cognitive information processing and the transfer of learning to real-life situations were examined through the application of DEAL, Symptom, and RACSR strategies.
In the era of globalization, the density of information requires students to go beyond mere reading and summarization toward deep perception and Critical Literacy. This research is necessitated by the urgent need to enhance functional literacy and establish cognitive information-processing skills in the modern educational paradigm.
Method
The study employs an Action Research model, conducted in a general secondary school in Kazakhstan with 16 seventh-grade students (n=16). This model allowed the teacher to function as a practitioner-researcher, observing cognitive responses in real-time and adjusting instructional strategies accordingly. The research focused on the moral and ethical conflict in the short story "The Fire" by A. Faizollauly. Data Collection and Analysis Instruments A mixed-methods approach was used to collect qualitative and quantitative data: 1. Criterion-Referenced Assessment: Student performance was measured using descriptors based on Bloom’s Taxonomy (Knowledge to Evaluation), allowing for the tracking of analytical growth. 2. Observation Log: Used to record the cognitive activity, peer interactions, and logical reasoning of the 16 students during collaborative tasks. 3. Metacognitive Reflection: Tools like "Interesting, Difficult, Valuable" were used to assess students' self-regulation and their subjective perception of the learning process. Implementation of Instructional Strategies Students were organized into four heterogeneous groups based on differentiation principles, fostering social cognitivism and peer learning. The following strategic framework was applied: • DEAL Method (Describe, Explain, Analyze, Link): Students described the scene of the fire (Describe), explained Dastan’s sense of guilt (Explain), and analyzed the conflict between Dastan’s emotional bravery and the Elder’s rational reasoning (Analyze). Finally, they linked the moral choices to their own life experiences (transfer of learning). • Symptom Method (Problem Tree): This visual tool enabled students to deconstruct the "roots" of the conflict (negligence) and its "leaves" (legal fear, crisis of friendship, and pangs of conscience). • RACSR Strategy (Relationship, Assessment, Challenge, Support, Results): This strategy was used to evaluate Dastan’s proposal to confess. Students assessed the character's moral courage, challenged the "traitor" label, and identified the social support needed for ethical decision-making. Conclusion of the Intervention The final stage involved the synthesis of information into a new product: a "Code of Responsibility." This evidenced a high level of transfer of learning, moving students beyond functional reading toward high-order evaluation and synthesis.
Expected Outcomes
This study investigated the effectiveness of systematic reading strategies in developing the analytical and cognitive skills of students, using A. Faizollauly's story "The Fire" as a case study. The research confirms that the purposeful integration of instructional scaffolds—specifically the DEAL, RACSR, and "Symptom" (Problem Tree) methods—transforms literature lessons from passive content delivery into high-level cognitive processes. A key finding was the utility of the Problem Tree method, which enabled the 16 seventh-grade students to look beyond the surface level of the text. By identifying the root causes of social issues (such as poverty, domestic struggle, and personal accountability) rather than just observing their consequences, students established strong causal links and developed deeper structural analysis skills. Furthermore, the implementation of the RACSR strategy demonstrated that students could reach the highest levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy: Evaluation and Synthesis. By critiquing the moral dilemmas faced by the characters (Dastan and Tastan), students successfully connected literary themes with broader socio-ethical contexts. The final product of the intervention—the development of a "Code of Responsibility"—serves as clear evidence of successful transfer of learning from theoretical knowledge to social practice. In conclusion, fostering analytical and cognitive skills through strategic reading is essential for modern education. The results indicate that moving away from direct instruction toward inquiry-based strategies enhances students' functional literacy. This approach not only cultivates proficient readers but also develops socially responsible individuals capable of critical decision-making. Future application of these strategies across various literary genres is recommended to further unlock students' intellectual potential.
