Paper Session
Contribution
Writing is a critical component of language acquisition and the development of cognitive skills. A student’s ability to write effectively depends not only on grammar and sentence structure but also on their capacity to organize ideas logically and express opinions coherently. In contemporary education, developing students’ communicative competence is a pressing challenge. Competence involves the practical application of knowledge and skills in real-life contexts.
According to F.Sh. Orazbaeva, “Communication is a concept that includes relationships, messages, connections, and demonstrates human speech through linguistic features, social meaning, social function, and mutual understanding”. In the digital age, essay-writing skills are increasingly essential for students, particularly those preparing for exams such as IELTS and TOEFL.
This study focuses on teaching elementary and lower-secondary students how to write short essays using the POPS formula. POPS—a method developed by South African professor David McCoid-Mason—structures student writing into clear, logical steps: presenting a point, explaining it, providing proof, and summarizing with a conclusion. The formula trains students to move from simple to complex ideas and develop precision, clarity, and consistency in their written work.
The research highlights the challenges students face in essay writing, particularly in Russian language classes, including difficulty understanding questions, providing examples, limited vocabulary, and inconsistent expression of ideas. By implementing the POPS formula, students can learn to structure their essays logically, provide evidence for their opinions, and summarize effectively, thereby improving both their writing competence and confidence.
The study also emphasizes the relevance of early essay writing practice. According to the NIS curriculum, the learning objective “L2. Essay Writing” is introduced from grades 7 to 12. Mastery of essay writing in the lower grades equips students with skills applicable across multiple subjects, including Kazakh and Russian language and literature, English, and history. By using the POPS formula, students gain the ability to express their thoughts systematically, which is vital for academic success and personal development.
Method
The study employed a mixed-method approach to identify and address difficulties in essay writing. A survey was conducted among students in grades 7–8 in Russian language classes. The survey included four questions to assess students’ comprehension, ability to provide examples, vocabulary usage, and logical consistency. Survey results indicated: 18% of students did not fully understand the essay prompt 22% struggled to provide specific examples 27% experienced difficulties due to limited vocabulary 33% expressed ideas inconsistently due to lack of clarity To address these challenges, the POPS formula was introduced as a step-by-step method to structure short essays: Point – Presenting an opinion or argument Opinion/Reason – Explaining why the opinion is valid Proof/Example – Providing evidence or examples Summary/Conclusion – Summarizing the argument and stating a final thought Classes were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group (8K) received instruction using the POPS formula, starting with short texts in table format to practice the method. The control group (8L) received traditional essay instruction. Both groups later wrote essays on the same topics, and their performance was compared to evaluate the effectiveness of the POPS method. Data analysis focused on improvements in clarity, consistency, vocabulary use, and overall essay structure. Quantitative comparisons were made using writing scores, while qualitative observations assessed student engagement and confidence in expressing ideas.
Expected Outcomes
The study is expected to demonstrate that students taught using the POPS formula exhibit: Greater clarity and organization in essay writing Increased ability to provide specific examples and evidence Improved vocabulary usage and logical consistency Higher overall writing scores compared to students receiving traditional instruction The results are anticipated to show that structured guidance using the POPS method accelerates skill acquisition, reduces common errors, and fosters critical thinking. Additionally, students trained in this method are expected to transfer these skills to other subjects and standardized exams, ultimately enhancing their academic performance and communicative competence.
