Project IRIS (Inclusive Research in Irish Schools) is a longitudinal research project investigating policy, provision, experiences and outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs within the Republic of Ireland. Data have been collected through a national survey of schools, focus groups with service users and providers and the construction of case studies undertaken in primary, post-primary and special schools. The research seeks to develop an understanding of the ways in which current provision for children and young people with special educational needs impacts upon their schooling experiences and their social, academic and emotional learning outcomes. During the first stages of the project the researchers conducted a review of the Irish research literature that has considered developments in special and inclusive literature over the past ten years (Rose, Shevlin, Winter & O'Raw 2010). This provided the basis for the development of research questions and approaches used for the subsequent stages of the research. A further review of the literature has allowed for a comparison of educational policy, provision, experiences and outcomes for students with special educational needs to be made with those of their peers elsewhere in Europe, USA and Australasia.
During stage 2 of the project research team used focus groups with teachers, support service professionals, diability support groups and school principals to develop a picture of school provision in Ireland and responses to policies designed to promote a more inclusive education system. This was followed by the construction of case studies based upon data from 10 primary, 10 post-primary and 4 special schools across Ireland. It is these case studies that form the basis of the paper here presented.
