05 SES 11 A, Urban Mentoring Practices with Children and Youth at Risk
Symposium
Contribution
Mentoring is becoming more and more a common practice in different european institutions and civic organizations. In the last twenty years, some universities have developed mentoring programmes aiming at promoting social inclusion of immigrant children and youth in urban areas such as Malmö, Berlin, Helsinki, London, Ljubjlana or Girona among others. Mentorship programs developed by university students and primary and secondary school students have a two-fold effect. On the one hand, college students become a role model for children and youth at risk. They have an impact on their educational aspirations and expectations. Teacher's expectations are also affected. On the other, university students are learning intercultural skills and social commitment. In this panel, research outcomes related to the different type of impacts of these mentoring practices on children and youth at risk will be presented.
