04 SES 04 B, Students’ Experiences in Education
Paper Session
Contribution
In the last fifty decades, there has been a heated and principled debate over the organization of the education of disabled children and adolescents. In all western countries, severe criticism has been levelled at the traditional system based on special institutes, schools and classes. The separate special education system was accused not only of labelling but also of the lowering of academic standards. In addition, the structure of the social and ethnic background of special education students was biased, that is, the relative share of these students was higher than their share of the entire age group. The foundation of the segregation-integration-inclusion discussion was thus laid.(Dunn 1968; Tomlinson 1982; Barton & Armstrong 1999; Skrtic 1991). The primary focus of the present article is not on the educational level solutions but rather on the consequences of these solutions to the children’s identity development. Identity is defined as involving both the labelling of the teaching arrangements and the standard of instruction (Peters 2010). The article views the teaching arrangements of disabled children in the light of their own narratives. What kind of experiences from education did they have? How is the segregation – integration division portrayed in the children’s and adolescents’ narratives? What meanings do the various educational options convey from the point of view of the children’s identity? (Shakespeare 2006; Thomas 1999; Ware 2004; Gallagher etc. 2004; Conrad & Schneider 1985).
