Research Questions:
1.What is the effect of drama method on the 4th grade students’ mathematics achievement in fractions.
2.What is the effect of drama method on the 4th grade students’ mathematics attitude in fractions.
This research aims to study the effects of drama method applied in “Fractions” unit in Mathematics on 4th grade Primary School on student’s success and mathematics attitude.Drama method, develops itself constantly, it’s extremely beneficial in terms of contemporary method in education. Drama as a method, still is not used many field in education, especially in mathematics.
Mathematics as an abstract lesson, it contains many abstract topics. In the primary school, students are at concrete operational stage. The main characteristic of the concrete operational stage is depend on five fundamental senses. In other words individuals must see, hear, feel, touch, smell, taste, or, in many ways taking advantages of senses in order to “know” (Martin, D.J., 1997). They don’t understand abstract subject easily.
The importance of fraction in mathematics curriculum was emphasized by researchers in the literature (Brady &Bowd, 2005:38). Fraction is difficult to understand in the early stage for children. Mathematics teachers should give examples and applications from the real world (Brady ve Bowd, 2005:44). Some researches (Aksu, 1997; Hart, 1993; Leinhardt & Smith, 1984; Newstead & Murray, 1998; Orton & Frobisher, 1996; Bulut , 1988) showed that students have some difficulties in regard to understanding fraction (Haser & Ubuz, 2002:53).
Teachers should give enough time, especially in primary stage, because understanding of fraction concept takes a long time for students. When teaching fraction theme, teachers should choose activity which children can be active. Teachers also should start children’s prior experience from their daily life (Baykul, 2005:279).
