The urbanization process in the Basque Country has suffered a major boost in the late 20th century, and, above all, the city of Bilbao, which has traditionally been a trading center, later industrial, and today is a city of services and a cultural center of international reference. We have seen that in school materials the percentage of the urban contents have greatly increased in the 21st century, and the presence of the city of Bilbao is also growing.

In this paper we present Bilbao through textbooks, and we will see how the development of the city is reflected in different texts, as well as areas associated with the city, such as immigration, culture, trade, tourism .... etc.

Method

We have researched the characteristics of the textbooks used in the Basque Country during the 20th century as well as their development, because there are significant differences between the ones published in the early 20th century and the ones published at the end of the century. We have set three main periods to explain the development of Basque textbooks. The first period goes from 1876 to 1974: it brought the abolition of the law code, and was the time of the Basque Renaissance, as well as of the creation of the Basque Government, of the Ikastolas and of the unified Basque language. The second period goes from 1975 to 1990, time of the development of Basque schools and commercial publishing houses. Many textbooks were published during the third period, 1991-2006, most of them in publishing houses outside the Basque Country.

Expected Outcomes

In conclusion, we can say that the city of Bilbao is an urban center that is increasingly associated with the curricular content of textbooks. The city is virtually absent in the materials of the first period of study and acquires an increasingly important presence as the century progresses; it is associated with an industrial and commercial reality. The early 21st century books reflect a dynamic and modern city, a meeting place for tourists from all over the world with a cosmopolitan cultural offer, which has become a reference center.
