The rapid development of digital technology affects the way in which audiences collect, interpret, and construct information in their daily life. Due to the convergence of media in the 21st century, it is not suitable to apply the traditional way to categorize media. Therefore, “new media” in this study is defined with their distinctive features, namely, multi-modality, constructivist epistemology, multi-directional interactivity, and social networking. New media literacy has derived from a convergence of all literacies such as classic literacy, audiovisual literacy and digital literacy or information literacy (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2007) and been deemed as an essential competency for the globalizing century; there is still no clear agreement reached among researchers. It is important to operationally define the scope and measure it. This presentation will propose a quantitative model on measuring new media literacy which is not able to be identified in the literature. The development and validation of a survey instrument based on Chen & Wu’s (2010) two way continuum framework, and the results from primary, secondary, and Pre-U students (from P.4 to Pre-U 1) in Singapore will be shared. Furthermore, the presenter will also discuss the possible adoption of the survey in other cultural context.
