02 SES 13 B, Looking into the Mirror: International Alignments and Differences in Australian, Finnish and Swedish VET
Symposium
Contribution
A new Curriculum will be implemented in September 2011 in Sweden with a new organization of the upper secondary school with a stronger separation between the theoretical and the vocational programmes. This means a change in the structure of the syllabus for mathematics. Mathematics is not particularly visible in vocations and in vocational programmes. Despite this policyideas of what kind of content students in vocational programmes are to learn have differed over the years. Ideas have emanated from different groups as policymakers, trade unions, writers of the syllabus, text book authors educators and other. In this paper the major ideas of VET mathematics over the years are presented and related to research on these issues. The current syllabus of VET mathematics and the new syllabus of 2011 are presented and compared. In what respect will the mathematics content differ and what are the reasons for this change? What are the affordances and constraints in mathematics for VET students now and for the future? A review of a developmental project from the former reform from 1994 will be discussed to shed light upon what students and teachers in the vocational programmes in mathematics might experience in the phase of implementation.
