Symposium
Contribution
The monograph can be a very introspective experience; it seems such an end in itself that it is easy to lose sight of its function as a means to something else. Writing for publication can help look beyond the immediate demand of the thesis, while also aiding in its production. Yet, I can’t imagine being at the beginning of the process and being required, there and then, to produce publications. For me, there were various developmental stages in writing for publication: reviews, conference papers and writing with my supervisor were three key milestones for me. Doing a thesis by monograph, I found it impossible not to imagine the whole thing in one great mass, and when it was too early on to imagine what the end result might look like, this was debilitating. Yet, by the time I came to writing, this image of the whole sustained and disciplined me. Writing connected these disparate points., but it required nurture. In retrospect, it was the space that the monograph allowed me, with which to develop a voice, which enabled the eventual production of both ends and means.
