22 SES 14 A, Research Methodologies in Higher Education (Part 2)
Symposium, continues from 22 Ses 13 A
Contribution
Analysing the transition from Higher Education to the world of work is challenging. First major question is what kind of data is available and should be used - official statistics or surveys. Each kind of data has its own possibilities and limitations. Second, the researchers should think about the timeframe they are utilizing. A short timeframe after the graduation does not necessarily reveal the correct state of employment. Third, most of the studies are cross-sectional quantitative studies, but what is missing and needed, are well organised comparative studies, follow-up-studies and qualitative studies, as well as studies applying combined methods. By using these approaches the transition from the HEI´s to the world of work could be researched more thoroughly. Fourth, the Finnish experience shows that using simplistic notions of employment should not be the only measurement used in Quality Assurance Schemes. Simplistic measurements (employed – unemployed) to rank HEIs may lead to a limited, if not to erroneous conclusions about the quality of higher education. A meta-analysis of recent employability research carried out in Finland, as well as some recommendations, will be presented.
