22 SES 13 C, Higher Education Graduates at the World of Work – the Third Round (Part 2)
Symposium, continues from 22 Ses 12 C
Contribution
In era of massified higher education new graduates compete in the labour market for jobs with numbers of other degree holders. The situation they face can be approached through job competition model. According to model the candidates are ranked by particular criterion. The formal qualification is usually the most significant of them. The education is also used by employers as a signal of general trainability or of the possession of specific skills. The paper aims to answer: How the graduates experience the job competition when entering labour market? How they see the recruiting criteria used by employers, in addition to qualification? How the degree holders see the value and status of their higher education degree in the labour market? The qualitative data is gathered by open-ended questions of questionnaire survey to graduates (n=2145), and it is analyzed by means of content analysis. The respondents represent both sectors (universities and polytechnics) of Finnish dual higher education and two study fields. Many graduates experienced the job competition as laborious and time-consuming job search process and as difficulties in finding an adequate employment.
