Session Information
05 SES 04 A, 'Full Service and Extended' Schools: A European Response to the Challenges of Urban Education? (Part I)
Symposium, to be continued in 05 SES 05 A
Contribution
Het Keerpunt is a part-time vocational school in a multicultural, inner-city neighbourhood in Antwerp, with a rather unique vision. The principal sees the role of an extended school as a stall in a market place where supply and demand of local services can meet, and the school is part of the social tissue. Our presentation will start with an overview of the extended school movement in Flanders and then focus on the vision and specificities of Het Keerpunt. The restoration of socially excluded students’ self-esteem, active learning, intercultural education and ‘the school at the service of the local community’ are key concepts in this approach. Our case study includes an analysis of the social environment, participant observation, and in-depth interviews with different stakeholders including local government officers, the principal, teachers, parents and students.
