The scale of technical and technological challenges outlined in UNESCO reports and their importance emphasized by the social sciences: sociology (M. Castells and M. Maffesoli), psychology (P. Wallace), pedagogy (W. Strykowski and B. Śliwerski), cultural studies and media studies (D. Tabscott) and other areas, show the significance of the ability to apply the so-called "new technology" in the process of teaching and learning. As noted by M. Castells, pace of civilizational transformation process forces a continuous (un)conscious accustoming to more and more perfect technological creations, making the "ordinary" instruments, such as: a computer, mobile phone or iPad to become a "humanized" everyday partner of children from the so-called “cyber generation”. The changes related to the digitization of everyday life, including the lives of children and young people modeled by the media, are also reflected in the school. The attempt to digitize learning materials and, above all, attempts to digitize school textbooks, have been adopted around the world, including South Korea, Japan, USA, Sweden, France and Poland. These actions are associated with the technical preparation of schools to use mobile devices, e.g. iPads. In a situation when e-textbooks will become everyday school reality, devices such as netbooks, e-readers, smartphones and hybrid iPad are likely to become standard tools used in education. However, the phenomenon of the introduction of iPad into education is still in the testing process around the world and there is no comprehensive scientific data, which would fully describe and analyze this subject. Teachers have to face this educational challenge, because they can’t benefit from the experience of other teachers in preparing lessons with iPads. Therefore, we face a change that can lead to a significant and lasting change in the approach to education.
Study carried out in this area constitutes a critical multi-step process of various actions to ensure an objective, accurate and comprehensive diagnosis and description of this part of reality, which is the use of the iPad in the high school. This study is important not only to those involved in the process, but also to other people, due to its pioneering, enlightening and instructive purpose. The researched middle school was the first Polish school to introduce the iPad into the education process. The research, therefore, focuses on the identification of pedagogical consequences arising from the use of the iPad in the middle school.
The subject of the study is to recognize and identify stimulators and inhibitors of the use of the iPad in the middle school.
Study has been carried out in a Private Leonard Piwoni middle School since 15 June 2011. Studies have been consulted with the advisory group, which consists of: Prof. Maria Czerepaniak - Walczak, Prof. Elżbieta Perzycka - University of Szczecin and Prof. Jaroslaw Janio - Santa Ana College, USA.
