Szczecin is a city in area with a unique hisotry. Up to 1945 the city was German, after II World War, the native inhabitants were forced to move as the boarders have changed. Heavily destroyed urban area was settled mostly by Polish, Ukrainian and Jewish people who many times were ordered to move there against their will. This forced situation was not a situation of multiculturalism but rather assimilation to the mainstream culture and norms.

The descendends of the so called pioneers, their grandchildren and greatgranchildren, are now studying in one of the city's univerisites. Our observations show that they do not have knowledge not only about the history of the place they live in but also in many cases see their local enviroment as homogenic. This is a problematic situation as the number of immigrants, foreign students and political refugees is growing. Szczecin since few year is experiencing first signs of different cultures on the level of everyday life. Unlike other academic centres like Warsaw or Cracow "the obcious" Other is still seen as something odd and exceptional. However, it is expected that the number of people of other backround will increase.

The aim of this paper is to show to readiness of future teachers educated at the Pedagogy Department of Univeristy of Szczecin for meeting the Other in both professional and private  life. The research question is: "What are the attitudes of future teachers towards the Other"?
