10 SES 06 A, Contributions of Social Representations Theory for Researches in Education Area
Symposium
Contribution
The main purpose of this paper is to examine the social representations of teachers, as expressed by parents of pupils, on two specific dimensions: the role of teachers in the lives of their children and the particularities/constraints of the teaching activity. The underlying theoretical framework is the theory of social representations, which outlines the social nature of common sense knowledge. Social representations are socially constructed and shared, as a result of the complex interaction between the subject (with specific features and experiences), the object, and a set of dispositions internalized by individuals and transmitted by the media. Empirical research was based upon the goal of identifying the objectified representations of teachers. It was used the quantitative method, through statistical analysis of data obtained from a questionnaire to 137 parents of pupils of a Portuguese public school (3rd cycle of basic education). Results show that social representations of teachers as expressed by parents are focused on the teacher's role as an educator (transmission of values, eg) and contain a positive assessment of the performance of teachers, despite the perceived lack of motivation of these professionals, justified by reasons external to the teachers themselves (changes in the educational system, eg).
