In empirical educational research, the choice of research design, next to research instruments and analysis strategies, affects whether relationships between variables can merely be described, or whether and how relationships can be used to explain educational outcomes in causal terms. In this workshop, we will give a brief introduction to applications of two concepts in designing educational assessments – cross-sectional and longitudinal research designs – and provide you with an overview of the preconditions and implications associated with both. With a focus on longitudinal research, we will then introduce you to panel studies such as the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) and trend studies such as the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) to outline the analytical potentials of these studies and present to you modes of accessing their data for your research. Further, we invite you to discuss with us any questions you might have with regard to designing your own cross-sectional or longitudinal research projects.
