This year marked a period of vibrant growth and deepened collaboration within the Emerging Researchers’ Group (ERG). The group continued to strengthen its mentoring structures, expand its inclusivity, and refine the review and feedback processes that support high-quality academic development among emerging researchers.
A major highlight this year was the Walking Together Initiative, piloted on Sunday afternoon before the formal start of the ERC. Originally conceived at Edge Hill University to foster collegial networks, support wellbeing, and explore host cities together, the walk provides emerging researchers with a relaxed opportunity to meet new colleagues, build a stronger sense of community, and enjoy international connections beyond formal sessions. At ERC 2025 in Belgrade, this special edition of the walk was kindly promoted by Mariia Tishenina and Jessica Eccles-Padwick, and accompanied by Lenka Protić, Sanja Stojiljković, Aleksandar Milovanović, and Jovan Mihojević, local PhD students who guided participants along the route while sharing insights, stories, and hidden gems of the city. The initiative proved highly successful and will now become a permanent feature of the ERC programme, with preliminary arrangements already in place with the Local Organising Committee in Tampere for next year.
The Newcomers Meeting, now in its second edition, followed and stood out as another highlight, creating a welcoming and supportive environment for first-time participants. Newcomers were introduced to the ERG community, with Co-Convenors actively engaging in dialogue, sharing guidance, and fostering a strong sense of belonging.
Finally, the Lunch Break Sessions, designed to promote informal networking, were also a success. Despite some logistical challenges, they generated lively discussions and valuable feedback, inspiring refinements such as the introduction of table moderators. The collaborative efforts of the Link Convenor, Senior Mentor, and Co-Convenors in managing the conference, addressing challenges, and ensuring a smooth experience reflected the ERG’s collective strength, adaptability, and commitment to inclusion.
