The paper describes a study which investigates the relation between the use of science centres exhibits and the learning of scientific concepts. Two specific microcontexts were analysed - student's procedures and students' understanding of scientific concepts. Theoretically, the study is mainly based on Bernstein's theory of pedagogic discourse (1990, 1996) which gave the concepts to characterize the interaction and to analyse the influence of the characteristics of each microcontext on students' scientific learning. The study suggested that there is no direct relation between what students do (procedures) and what they learn (concept understanding). The sociological characteristics of the two microcontexts, particularly the evaluation criteria, showed to be responsible for the distinct results obtained by distinct students in the two microcontexts.
