Contribution
Topic:
Main topic is to describe and evaluate secondary school health promotion project from various viewpoints.
Conceptual Framework.
Laurea is a University of Applied Sciences in the larger Helsinki metropolitan area. The pedagogical framework for learning developed in Laurea is called Learning by Developing (LbD), which is based on authenticity, partnership, experimental learning, research and creativity (Raij 2007, Kallioinen 2008).
Student’s learning is related to genuine projects rooted in the world of work and the students are involved in these projects right from the beginning of their studies (Laurea Pedagogical Strategy 2007).
One working life partner for Laurea is one secondary school in the city of Espoo. School health promotion project was planned for the years 2006-2009,
Targets for this project are:
1. Main aim is to promote good health behaviour with various kinds of interventions.
2. Laurea students can practice their guidance skills.
3. Laurea students are able to carry out meaningful entities of the secondary school health teaching curriculum with other actors.
4. Laurea students will produce new material and methods for health education.
5. Laurea students will learn to motivate pupils with various methods
(Pesso, K. 2006)
Objectives :
To acquire evaluative information of Lbd learning model in context of health promotion.
To acquire information of the process of the school health promotion project
Research Questions:
What kind of LbD-learning experiences the Laurea students have got during this project ?
How do the pupils in secondary school describe their experiences of the health promotion activities, which where organized and carried out by the Laurea students ?
How do the working life partners describe Laurea students’ participation during Health Promotion project ?
How do the teachers in Laurea describe students’ learning activities and role in the Secondary school health project?
Method
Methodology:
Process evaluation is an instrument for assessing the quality of interventions. One main target is to show, how the project operates it’s context (Robson 2001, 99) and also how the respondents define, experience and constitute their ideas of the intervention. (Vries & al 1992, 102)
In this process evaluation study both qualitative and quantitative methods are in use.
First, the interviews of teachers and working life partners represent qualitative methods. This data will be analysed by content analysis. Secondly, the questionnaire given to the secondary school 9th grade represents quantitative methods and the data is will be analyzed by SPSS program. Quantitative descriptive figures will also be gathered from the whole of the project.
Expected Outcomes
Expected outcomes:
Experiences of Lbd during the project have been positive. Students constructed innovative health education material and tested several kinds of group work and teaching methods as well as got good experience of working with the youngsters. LbD elements are easily found from the student reports.
In April 2009 the9th graders will be asked to fill in the questionnaires. It is expected to get positive feedback and also some new ideas for the future. Working life partners (=3) and Laurea teachers ( =3) will be interviewed during spring 2009 as well. It can also be expected that the teachers will describe targets of the project achieved as a success.
