Contribution
International empirical research comes to the conclusion that a high percentage of teachers all over Europe suffer from an unhealthy level of stress.
With a wide range of methods and instruments researchers from many disciplines (medicine, psychology, sociology…) have contributed to general knowledge about stress and strain. These unspecific findings are tried to be adapted to teaching professions in order to explain the specific phenomenon of teachers strain (Kyriacou 1998, 2000; Lazarus & Folkman 2006).
The following paper starts from the assumption that teacher stress is mainly caused by the unique factors of this profession. Therefore the paper describes these factors in the first step (Lortie 2002; Schaarschmidt 2007).
On this basis the paper goes a step further and investigates that this dimensions are applicable to teaching processing work. Thereby their specific impact on the total load of teachers can be illustrated.
In a third step the paper asks if these stress factors are either determinated by personality or if they are a part of the professional habitus which could be changed. This second option criticises the predominant position that workload and the resulting mental stress are only slightly adjustable.
Because so many teachers are affected by stress and complain about it my findings contribute to a better understanding of the specific mode teaching professions are a possible reason for suffering from this work.
Furthermore the paper shows some possible interventions which prevent stress- and burnout.
