Symposium
Contribution
In response to the rising costs of degrees, the emphasis on graduate formation and employability, and the global teacher shortage, Universities and Initial Teacher Education (ITE) providers are looking to ways of improving student experience and partnership connections (Abelha et al., 2020; Marinoni et al., 2020). UniConnected is an innovative online platform designed to address pressing issues in the Australian education system, particularly teacher shortages and student access to authentic professional formation experiences (UNESCO, 2024). Providing students opportunities for authentic workplace experiences has the advantage of reducing praxis shock, increasing employment pathways and enabling confidence and resilience building. The platform addresses the challenges faced by universities in creating meaningful partnerships and helps schools and early childhood centres alleviate workforce pressures while providing authentic and relevant paid work opportunities for teacher candidates. UniConnected facilitates early connections between aspiring teachers and their future workplaces, offering a supportive pathway into the profession while addressing the exodus of experienced educators due to workload and burnout (Heffernan et al., 2022; Longmuir, et al., 2022). In does this through providing a targeted, profession-specific platform that connects university students, faculties, and industry partners across sectors. By enabling direct access to a verified cohort of teacher candidates, Schools and Early Childhood centres which partner with the university, can offer paid casual, part-time, and graduate employment opportunities to alleviate their staffing issues. The 2024 pilot study tracked a steady increase in user profiles and a strong upward trend in direct partner reach-outs to teacher candidates since the platform's launch. A mixed-methods approach, including quantitative surveys and qualitative analysis of open-ended responses, and data analytics provides insights into the platform's impact on student user experiences as well as university partner perceptions. This research highlights how UniConnected exemplifies the use of technology to enhance opportunities for innovation in teacher education. Offering opportunities for teacher candidates to engage in low stakes yet authentic professional experiences, seeks to address the complex challenges of graduate preparation and industry workforce needs. This approach also demonstrates the potential of collaborative, targeted solutions in nurturing the next generation of educators and supporting their journey towards fulfilling careers in education. Enabling teacher candidates to gain authentic work experience beyond traditional placements has potential for the reimagining of professional formation and offers practical and pragmatic pathways for ITE providers, governments and education systems struggling to build sustainable talent pipelines for schools and early childhood centres.
