08 SES 12 A, Researching Health Promoting Schools: Potentials and Challenges of Mixed Methods
Parallel Paper Session
Contribution
It is well known that the concepts and processes in health promoting school approaches are challenging to capture within either quantitative or qualitative paradigm in order to develop evidence based research knowledge; therefore mixed methods design is useful.
Finland joined the European Network of Health Promoting Schools (ENHPS, since 2007 the School for Health in Europe SHE) in 1993 to effect health and education policies and to develop health promotion activities in schools. Since that the Finnish research group has described and explored i) how the mission of health promoting schools has clarified at national political and at school community levels; ii) how the general infrastructure for health promoting schools has developed; iii) how active participation has actualized and iv) how issues related to health and health promotion are included at different levels of curriculum. Additionally, research has focused on topics like occupational wellbeing of school staff, pupils’ views of learning nutrition health issues and home - school partnership.
