28. Sociologies of Education

Interview with Link Convenor 2019

The Sociologies of Education network provides a dedicated forum for sociologists of education in Europe, who may be working in different disciplinary contexts, to mobilize sociological thinking about the fragmentation of modernity and its projects in education in the context of global and transnational social change and Europeanization of education.

The Foci of the Network

  • Sociologies of the ‘common school’ in Europe

Its fabrication, modernization, its impact on equality and justice, legitimation crises, its republican character, the post-Soviet common school.
  • State-less sociologies of education

Voluntarism, private companies and privatisation, private foundations, civic movements, religion, regions.
  • Sociologies of learning

Learning spaces and technologies, individualisation, construction of self, relation to systems, lifelong learning.
  • Sociologies of comparison

Europeanisation, Internationalisation: reflexive approaches to comparison, data, knowledge production, ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ knowledge, travellers and translation, classification.

The network is interested in working with perspectives that combine political science and sociology in ‘political sociology’; along with a renewed interest in materialities, in actor-network relations; the sociology of knowledge and science/technology; and cultural political economy as a way of approaching the changing social relations and processes of the societies that constitute the European space.

Other Networks

The Network has a clear prospectus and focus on sociological work which is not in conflict with any other network. A common interest in the sociological analysis of European education will enable  joint sessions with some other networks.
